Agree or Disagree?

Now that you have answered agree or disagree to all of the following prompts, you need to take two and develop your ideas into much greater detail. Understand, the only wrong answer is an unsupported answer. Be to the point, be logical, and use examples to state your case. Your word count for each response should be no less that 200 words.
1) Authority figures are right no matter what my opinions may be.

2) Kids always do the right thing if they have the choice.

3) Parents should always side with their children.

4) Adults always listen to each other and have all the facts before they act.

5) Grades shouldn’t factor into a student’s eligibility for extracurricular
activities.

6) A person should tell the truth even if the truth will hurt others.

7) There are situations in which unfairness toward an individual is justified.

You will also need to comment on the posts of two other individuals. One you agree with and the other, someone you disagree with

9 comments:

  1. There are situations in which unfairness toward an individual is justified.

Disagree. People should all have the same rights and should be treated fairly. I think that if there is a situation where a person is treated unfairly by their friends or to make other people happier, people should be treated with their own rights and everyone should be equal. I think there are certain situations where people might thing that unfairness or bad treating may be justified because, they might think they’re doing it for the greater good but for me ,personally, I think treating someone without a good reason or with a good reason cannot be justified.

I think everyone knows how it is to feel to be treated with unfairness or with no care. Each and every one of us have been in that spot where a certain individual or a group of people are bullying you or treating you unfairly and siding with people against you. We all can agree that it is not a good feeling. That is unfair to us. But, I think that most of us can also say that we have been the bad guys. We all treated one person at a certain time unfairly without a good reason. We can look back at both examples and say that both of them can conclude in people’s feelings getting hurt.

Authority figures are right no matter what my opinions may be.

Disagree. Authority figures or people in charge are wrong sometimes. They are human which makes them make mistakes. But can accident’s like these can always be justified as an accident or as a human error? No. People in charge can be corrupt and can abuse their rights and their power. Some leaders want power over something important until the point that they do not care if it is evil or good or if they will benefit their people. In history we have many bad leaders as well as a lot of great leaders. Not all people in a position of power are bad.

If all leaders were bad there would be no elections. In a democracy people choose their leaders and people who will stand up for them and their rights. Unfortunately, people may not be the sharpest and choose bad leaders or people in power might not seem what they really are. People might seem good, caring and responsible but what really matters in people is what is underneath and what common people do not see. In conclusion I would like to state that in history we had many examples of good and bad leaders. Some of them were really sinister, some were corrupt and some were heroes. Not all people in charge are good but, they are not always bad.

  2. Prompt 1- Kids always do the right thing if they have the choice. (I disagree)

I disagree with the statement, which says that kids always do the right thing if they have the choice. Kids don’t always do the right thing or make the right choice, if they have a variety of options they can choose from. As the children get older, they become less dependent on their parents, and don’t always take advice from them. This makes kids more likely to make the wrong decision or to do the wrong thing. Not all decisions kids make are utterly important. If a kid is choosing what candy to eat, it’s not that big of a deal. But some choices, especially the ones concerning health and life are important. A kid, who is not dependant on his /her parents, can make the wrong decision if they choose to misbehave in class, instead of doing work. This kind of decision may affect the kid’s life in school. Another example of a kid doing the wrong thing while having a choice is when a kid decides to try smoking. This choice will for sure affect the kid’s health in a harmful way. Therefore, I believe that kids don’t always do the right thing, when they have the choice to do it differently.

Prompt 2- Adults always listen to each other and have all the facts before they act. (I disagree)

I disagree with the statement, which says that adults always listen to each other and have all the facts before they act. For sure, adults often have arguments and don’t always listen to each other. Adults might disagree about money, home chores, their children’s choices, work or spending their time. They might disagree about an important decision such as family choices without listening to each other. Adults also might disagree about little things like washing dishes or what time someone gets home. Sometimes, when adults disagree they manage to talk about it in a calm way, overlook all the facts and let both sides state their opinion. But often when adults disagree they begin to argue or fight, which can easily make their children upset. When such disputes become constant, it may lead adults to a bigger fight and possibly a divorce. When some adults divorce, they often don’t listen to each other, when one decides to confess or apologize. They also often don’t face all the facts while divorcing. If adults would listen more to each other, and have all the facts before they act more often, they would face less problems concerning friendship and family. Therefore, I believe that adults don’t always listen to each other and have all the facts before they act.

  3. 5) Grades shouldn’t factor into a student’s eligibility for extracurricular activities.
I agree that grades shouldn’t affect a students eligibility for extracurricular activities- up to a certain point. Studies show that a student’s participation in after school activities (especially sports) generally improve grades. A well rounded person gets good grades as well as does well in team and individual sports and the arts. In extracurricular activities, kids meet new people who can help them with their schoolwork if they are having trouble. Also, being part of team sports or other team activities helps develop skills like teamwork, cooperation, open-mindedness, and other things that can be valuable in life. Participating in sports and the arts can get you scholarships to universities, which some kids need to be able to go to university.

Sometimes, kids who are not doing well in a certain class might need to miss that class for a game if you are participating in a sport or a CEESA event if it is a team activity (math team, knowledge bowl, and sports). In this case it might be better for the teacher to judge whether that kid should participate in the event or not. I think that depending on what they will be missing that class and how they can make it up is a large factor in whether or not they should participate in the event.

    6) A person should tell the truth even if the truth will hurt others.
I disagree, sometimes you can lie in a situation where the truth might hurt somebody for no reason. This is a white lie. People use white lies often to keep from insulting someone when they ask “How do I look today”, and you think they don’t look very good. It is easier to tell someone they look fine when you don’t think so, than to tell them they look bad. If you tell them they look bad they might get really disappointed, or sad that they tried hard to look nice and they don’t.

I think it depends sometimes on how serious the situation is, whether you should tell a white lie or not. If it is an urgent and serious situation, where you might get in trouble if things go wrong, you shouldn’t lie no matter how bad it is. If someone does something to hurt someone else, it is best to tell the truth about it, even if it might hurt one of your friends. Many people do not agree with this and think that if it is going to hurt one of your friends that it is best to lie about it.

  4. 5) Grades shouldn't factor into a student's eligibility for extracurricular activities.
    AGREE
I agree because firstly, if a student was not allowed to participate in an extracurricular activity, it may affect the team or activity they are going to. A teacher's harsh marking may incite a team to lose the final of a tournament. The most famous athletes in the world are not necessarily intelligent, so if you go to school you should not be stopped from playing in a match or attending an activity. Although I believe they should not be a factor, I do not think it would work if it was a rule. There would always be exceptions: if the teacher was their coach, if the teacher thought the student deserved another chance or if student managed to sneak away to their extracurricular activity. On the other hand if a student was not achieving a satisfactory grade in a class, it would not be a good idea to attend an activity every day. Adding to that, they would need to work hard to catch up if they went abroad for a CEESA event. To conclude, I would like to restate that I agree that grades should not factor into a student's eligibility for extracurricular activities.

  5. 7) There are situations in which unfairness towards an individual are justified.
    AGREE
Although this statement can be debated for a long time, I agree. Instead of saying "always" like many other of the statements, this one says "there are situations". This makes it much easier to agree with because you only need one reason. For example, if there was a murder case, and Bob was accused of killing Daniela, and the jury found him not guilty, when he really was, that would be unfair to Daniela's family and friends. They would have wanted Bob to be sentenced to jail. This is a situation where Daniela's family and friends were treated unfairly, however, it was justified by the jury and the judge. Another example could be if Jeff was failing science and Mrs K told him to stay behind after school for detention, he may miss his important match against KIS. This means that he was treated unfairly, from his point of view, and from his coaches' and teammates' points of view. However, the action was justified because it was a school rule. I think that these two examples make the statement "There are situations in which unfairness towards an individual are justified" true, because although there are very few situations, there are some.

  6. A person should tell the truth even if the truth will hurt others.

I disagree with this statement. In some cases it is better to lie instead of telling the truth that will hurt others. You will cause no pain to the person that does not know the truth. In some cases it is better to tell the truth, for example when your friend bought an embarrassing T-shirt you should tell him the truth because other people will make fun of him and if he knows the truth he will not wear it. But there are other cases where not telling the truth is the good choice. An example of that can be when you see criminals running away from the police and tell them that the police is not chasing them anymore or that they went the other direction. This is an example when lying is a good thing. You should tell the truth in most of the cases, but in critical situations it is better to lie, which will result no pain to your friends or it will help to do the right thing. In conclusion it is better to lie than to tell the truth that will hurt others.

Kids always do the right thing if they have the choice.

I disagree with this. Sensible kids do the right thing often, but even the most intelligent ones take the wrong choice sometimes. Giving freedom to not sensible children can result horrible consequences. For example if kid’s parents leave for a few days and you have unlimited freedom until they come back. Sensible kids would act smart and do the things that they usually do when their parents are there. But there are a few kids that would act stupid and make a party. The people in the party will not care about the expensive objects in the house and might demolish it. It was the wrong choice and when the parents come back it will get even worse. Another example might be if the kids get to choose the groups or teams for a project or a football game. Most of the times the people that are the best in the subject will get together and the ones not as good will be left out and the game will be unfair. One more example might be when you are given time to work on a project in the class and the teacher went to a meeting. Some kids instead of working might fool around and will loose the time to work and might not finish it at home therefore they will fail the project. In conclusion I disagree with that statement.

  7. Comment #1: I disagree with this comment because although the authority figure most likely has more power than you that doesn't mean that he is always right. Anyone can make mistakes, even the best of man (said as in the human race not gender). Also most authority figures have a team of advisors who tell them what to say in any situation and they fight amongst themselves in order to find out who's idea is the best, this may result in them making the wrong choice throughout all the chaos of choosing what to do. no matter what age you are your opinions should be welcomed, heard, and respected, even if it is outright outrageous. adding onto that because you are thinking without all the stress the authority figure and his team of advisors then you can think much more clearly and may be able to account for all the consequences that may occur between any choices that the authority figure and his team of advisors might be faced with. even if you look through history and myths and legends you see many cases where authority figures have been wrong. Take for example the story of Cassandra who countless times foretold devastation for Troyes in the Trojan war but was never heard.

  8. Comment #2: I disagree with this statement because kids are impulsive and do things even if they know that it's the wrong choice.also this is a very rigid sentence so you could spend your whole life making the write choice and then have one wrong impetuous decision and then the whole thing crashes and breaks all because of the word ALWAYS. With the word always you cannot step out of line one single time or all your effort would have been for nothing and you would not be able to start again. adding onto that there are many times you have easy choices in life but with hard actions because the wrong decision might be very lavish and tempting which would sound a lot better than the results of the right choice although in the long run the right choice will probably be more helpful. some examples might be when a teacher tells a student to throw away their gum and they do but have another piece in their bag wether or not they take the other piece of gum or not, or for example in many book like...the rangers apprentice the protagonist Will has to choose between saving the kingdom or his girlfriend. Also there are examples when shopping if you have a list of what to buy but in the store you see something that your heart desires and you must pick between buying the things on the list or being irresponsible and being what you want instead. consequently you can make the right choose and in the end thank yourself which mostly won't happen because kids want to have fun rather than be serious, or you can be foolish and impetuous and make the wrong decision which may seem lavish at first but will turn out bad in the end.

  9. Kids always do the right thing if they have a choice.

    Disagree

I think that most of the kids start doing wrong things when they have a choice. If they feel that nobody controls them and they can do whatever they want, they usually end up as spoiled, unrespossible children that are not ready to do anything in life. Maybe that happens because most of them don’t know what is right and what is wrong. If you can’t tell the difference between what’s good and bad, then how can you do the right thing? If the right thing is something that you have to put a lot of effort in, then there is a really little chance that a child would choose it. I think that parents /teachers /friends have to help children, explain to them what’s good and what’s bad. If parents don’t give a damn what children think then how can they call themselves parents?

A person should tell the truth even if the truth will hurt others.

    Agree

I think that person should always tell the truth even if it will hurt others. Lying to someone is disrespectful to the person. When people are lying on the good purposes, they may not think that the staff they say to person may affect their/person’s / someone else’s future. If you are trying to be nice to someone, lying is the worst thing that you can do. First of all, people that lie are not respected in world. Secondly, lying about something important will affect other people’s future. And lastly, lying is something that nobody in the world should do.
